Overview

This course will enable healthcare providers to gain practical knowledge of the possible anatomical & biomechanical factors leading to anterior knee pain and specifically patello-femoral sensitivity (PFS).

It will also review some of the currently existing myths regarding the risk factors for the development of PFS such as Q angle, patellar tracking, ITB tightness, etc.

The course will review a clinically focused approach to the evaluation and diagnosis of PFS

Short Video Introduction with Bahram Jam

Management Options

Based on current studies, the management options reviewed will include

  1. Activity modifications (running, cycling, sitting and squats)
  2. Effective muscular and proprioceptive retraining exercises
  3. Footwear modifications
  4. Taping & bracing
  5. Pharmaceutical management, injections, and surgical options
  6. Knowing when there may be a central sensitization component

Learning Objectives

In this online course, we will:

  1. Define patellofemoral sensitivity (PFS) and its relationship to anterior knee pain.
  2. List the anatomical and biomechanical risk factors historically associated with PFS (e.g., Q‑angle, ITB tightness, patellar tracking).
  3. Explain the myths versus evidence-supported factors contributing to the development and prognosis of PFS.
  4. Describe how central sensitization may influence persistent patellofemoral pain
  5. Assess current literature and clinical evidence to determine the efficacy and timing of modalities such as taping, orthotics, and exercise for PFS.

Audience

This course is open to all physiotherapists, rehabilitation professionals, and healthcare professionals.

This course is relevant as patellofemoral pain is one of the most common causes of anterior knee pain seen in clinical practice. It provides an updated, evidence-informed approach that challenges outdated biomechanical explanations and equips physios with practical assessment and treatment strategies for managing persistent patellofemoral sensitivity
